Error while backing up OS X Snow Leopard through Time Machine

Am trying to backup my mac machine to an external NAS through Time Machine, so when I start the process it starts up normally but ends up immediately saying that the source is read only, unable to complete the process. What should I do now in order to avoid these kind of errors.
