How to change the login password without wiping the Hard disk?

I use Powerbook but yesterday I left it to my son in law who has now changed its login credentials and now I am not able to enter into it. The worst thing which is freezing my mind now is , he has also forgotten the password. What should I do? Is there any way to change the password without wiping out the hard disk? If yes then kindly provide full information about. For this kind act, I will ever be grateful to you.

    4. Now type in /sbin/mount -uw/

    6. Type in dscl . -passwd /Users/username password(Replace username with the "Account Holder's First Name" and Password with the "password" you want it to be.)
    8. Type in exit.
    9. At the log on screen go ahead and log on with your new password
