How many attempts allowed to use password for the Mac encrypted drive?

From the day I got my Macbook all the drives which were there are encrypted with passwords and now I just forgot one of the password and am not able to enter a particular drive. I just want to know how many attempts I can be able to try? Because I don't want to lose the data if its going to be only certain amount of times. Can you please suggest me some other steps to fix this issue?
