Macbook 4.1 Shut down issues running on Snow Leopard 10.6.8

I have the Macbook 4.1 which is running on mac os x Snow Leopard v 10.6.8, having issues with shutdown. When I give the command to shut down, though all the running programs ends one by one but the system won't turns off, it turns to a blues screen with rotating circle on it, and this stays till I click on start button. How should I fix this?
