Firevault & Firewall both are very useful application for Mac.
Both keeps your disk & data secure.
but Firevault gives more protection & keeps more secure

    Firevault
keeps data secure in your Mac.
Recovery HD must be in your Mac to use filevault.
you can also manage the Firevault & enable or disable it as your desire as given below

--> click on "security & privacy preference"

Firewall is very nice application for control the connection for one device from other device. It also gives protection against firewall.
It also give protection against undesirable application.
you can also manage the firewall applicaiton as your desire as given below

    Manage Firewall application

Re: What is the use of Filevault in Mac OS? Is it really secured when compared with the other OS firewalls?

    * FileVault is one which protects your Mac secrets from anyone unauthorized to see the information providing you maximizing security....!

    * If your Mac has secretial information you can encrypt the data in your Home folder using an OS X feature using FileVault....!!

    * Go to System preferneces -> choose security -> Filevault window appears...!!

    * You have to setup master password for the system as an administrator..!

    * It also has advantage that if FileVault is turned on and you have not logged in , other people on the computer will not be able to access those folders....

    * It is trusted to keep the data highly safe and secure than other OS firewalls....!!

Re: What is the use of Filevault in Mac OS? Is it really secured when compared with the other OS firewalls?

    Dear..

File vault works on the same format as other software like folder lock works as it encrypts the data and store it and after that when the data is required after giving a password the data will come. There is a password that comes with the option in which you have to provide the password to get the data. It is a option that keeps the data safe and any illegal access can be prevented.

There is one thing that needs to be understood that in case you lost the password then you can not get it back so be aware of it.

Hope it will help you in understanding it better

    Thanks

Re: What is the use of Filevault in Mac OS? Is it really secured when compared with the other OS firewalls?

    Dear..

File vault is a option that comes with Mac and it encrypts the data whenever not in use and hence make the date safe as nobody can access the data until a password is given. It is a good option for those who are very concerned about loosing the sensitivity and the privacy of the data. Whenever a data is used by the user after giving password it reverse the process of encryption and you can access the data. Other wise the data in encrypted form stays safe.

It is safe until a password is safe otherwise anybody can access the data. Also if you forgot the password then you have to forget the data also.

    Hope it will help

    Cheers...!!!

    Hello Friend...

It is basically used to store all your important information.
In this software, there is an lock system through which you can lock or unlock your information.

For further details about this, you can refer this link as well.

Re: What is the use of Filevault in Mac OS? Is it really secured when compared with the other OS firewalls?

File Vault is the inbuilt option of Mac OS which is carried over from Mac OS X 10.3(Panther) and it is one of the added benefit of the OS as you don’t need to go for any other third party application to keep your files and folders secured as Filevault will just do everything need for you. Basically what happens in Filevault is that it encrypts your files and folders before saving it to the hard disk which make it inaccessible to the others who use your system in different account. It gets decrypted to normal files and folders when you log in to your account.

So you can use this option whenever you need to store a important and personal data and be less worried about files getting tampered because it is highly impossible unless your password is out to others. Now there is one more added option available when you enable the File Vault which is the nothing but turning on security even on the virtual memory which means it encrypts even the virtual memory also.

Now to use the File Vault option all you have to do is go to Dock -> System Preferences -> Personal -> Security -> File Vault. So you have to define again a new master password for this. Always remember if you turn your Filevault on for your account and you forget your password of your account as well the master password for the Vault then probably you have to forget all the data which you stored in the Vault as it is highly impossible to recover the encrypted data so be cautious while using this option.

Once you select the File Vault option from the Security you can choose to give the limited administrator privileges such as installing software for everyone by checking the “Allow this user to administer this computer”.

As I said before Filevault is the security application which is followed from Mac OS X 10.3 (Panther) version after that there were some patches done for it and now there is new version been introduced in the Mac OS X Lion and Mountain Lion which is named as File Vault 2 and it uses a full disk XTS-AES 128 encryption to keep the data more tight and secure.

If you are a Mac OS user and you do envy the way it works then File Vault option is something which you have to experience and specially by upgrading to OS X Lion or Mountain Lion to feel the real use of the latest Filevault 2.
