Steps to fix the booting problem in Mac?

Recently I forgot the password for my Mac and so I was trying to change some various settings in terminal to check if I can bypass or so but after this my Mac is not booting up at all. It just goes till the Apple icon and keeps on loading for long time. What is the issue? Is there any steps which I can follow to overcome this problem? Can you please help?

As far as concern to your problem ďSteps to fix the booting problem in Mac?

According to me you can reboot your mac in several ways .Mac OS X has number of keys that you can use for booting process which I know.
When you boot your mac there are several things, through which you can boot your Mac.
    1) If you want to boot it from CD or DVD then restart your Mac while pressing the C drive key.
    2) Restart Mac OS X and hold mouse button.
    3) Hold the X key while restarting or booting the Mac.
    4) Hold Option key while restarting or booting the Mac.
    5) Hold the Shift key while you click the Login button at Login screen.
If you still donít find the Login screen during startup, just hold down Shift while Mac OS X boots until the finder option appears.
Hope the above information will solve your problem
    Thank you
